At the heart of her work are the Eagle Hoop Prophecy and the Four Sacred Gifts — teachings that illuminate the power within each of us for personal and collective transformation.
In 1994, a vision came to Don Coyhis, a Mohican Elder, as he slept in his house tucked into the large pine trees on the edge of the Rocky Mountains. An eagle flew above his sleeping self, dropping a beam of light upon his head, which expanded and transformed into a tree growing through all four seasons.
The tree then formed itself into a perfect circle—the sacred hoop—representing the earth and the universe. One hundred eagle feathers attached themselves to the hoop from all four directions.
Following guidance from seventeen Elders in South Dakota, the sacred eagle hoop was built. Twenty-seven indigenous Elders from around the world—representing the four colors and directions—came together in ceremony.
"The four colors, the four directions of the hoop, symbolize harmony and interdependence between the different peoples around the world. The hoop is meant to support all people to discover and trust the four sacred gifts, so that we can heal ourselves, our communities, and the earth."
During the sacred ceremony, the twenty-seven Elders blessed the hoop with four gifts necessary for healing and coming together.
The first gift is the power to release what binds us to the past, to forgive even what seems unforgivable, and to free ourselves and others from the chains of resentment and pain.
The second gift is the power to heal ourselves, our communities, and our relationship with the earth. The Elders prayed their healing medicines into the hoop.
The third gift is the power to come together, to recognize our interconnectedness, and to build bridges across all divisions that separate us.
The fourth gift is the ability to dream, to see wellness and wholeness, and to have the power to attain it—to envision and create a better future.

Her Story
Origins & Calling

Dr. Anita Sanchez, of Mexican-American and Nahua (Aztec) heritage, was born into a Midwest family that was economically poor, yet rich in indigenous wisdom. Fortified with the strength of her Elders and connection to the earth, she became the first in her family of over one hundred first cousins to earn a doctorate degree.
Having experienced nine years of childhood trauma and the race-related murder of her father, Anita understands what it takes to triumph over adversity, choose post-traumatic growth, and create a thriving life.
